AT&T Tilt

I got my new phone today and switched carriers to AT&T. att_tilt_large

  • Cricket phone died unexpectedly. Would cost upwards of $200 for a new one.
  • Cricket didn’t support the data options I wanted and coverage is less than favorable.
  • Found a really, really, REALLY great deal ($99 after $100 rebate) on the phone I’ve been wanting. It’s called the TyTN II made by HTC or rebranded as "The Tilt" by AT&T
  • Main Features: 3.5G Network support, Built-in WiFi, Built-in GPS, Touch Screen, Full QWERTY keyboard, 3.0 MP Camera, Windows Mobile 6 Pro Pocket PC based.
  • I CID Unlocked the phone (not SIM unlocked) so I can flash the ROM on the phone to a community created, optimized, AT&T bloat free ROM instead. Click here for screenshots (scroll down once there)
  • Active community forums at xda-developers for phone tweaks, optimizations, registry hacks, etc.
  • Tons and tons of 3rd party software
  • Gooooooooooooooooooogle Apps galore. I can check my gmail (via Flexmail for IMAP Idle "Push" functionality), use Google reader, Google SMS, Google Maps! (with my location feature), Google 411 - Sweeet!
  • Beats Apple’s Iphone in every category. Iphone = no 3G network support, no copy/paste function, gmail support sucks, etc.
  • Now for the AT&T contract: I’m locked into a standard 2 year contract.
  • Monthly price: $59 for 900 anytime minutes + $39 for Unlimited data access with 1500 text messages per month. Monthly total: $100 + taxes.
  • Nadine and Will on same network = awesome!
  • So far AT&T service when at my apartment blows chunky goats. Need to look into methods to boost signal.

Overall this phone is amazing! I’ve got it setup to sync my contacts using Plaxo for windows mobile, I’m using Oggsync to sync my google calandars and Milksync to sync my tasks at Remember the milk.

I don’t like the QWERTY keyboard. It’s cramped and hard to use. Instead I’ve been using TouchPal, a soft keyboard that I’ve installed on the phone. It’s an incredible keyboard that I’m still learning to use.

    Hey Joe,

Doesn’t Plaxo do everything in terms of online task, contact, and calendar management? Isn’t it redundant to use Plaxo, Oggsync and Milksync - all three? I ask because I am looking to accomplish the same without installing Outlook 2007 and minimizing the number of applications required to achieve it.

    thx.

I suppose you could accomplish it all with Plaxo. As far as contact management goes Plaxo is hands down the best. That said, I don’t much care for Plaxo’s implementation of calender and tasks. I’ll freely admit I’m a Google Fanboy so I religiously use Google Calendar. Finally RTM can’t be beat for task management. It’s simple, yet extremely powerful. Why Google doesn’t have a task manager is beyond me. Hopefully they end up buying RTM!

If I was looking for an all in one solution I’d go with Microsoft Exchange. I know you wanted to avoid Lookout (Outlook) but at least for now it’s the best for centralized two-way sync of your information. For a good hosted Exchange service try Mailstreet.com - I’ve used them in the past and they are really good. For push capability use Good Technologies service (which Mailstreet offers).

I’ve since switched to an iPhone. So at the moment I’m not using Plaxo or OggSync. (no iPhone sync for either yet) But just today RTM introduced a version of their service thats optimized for the iPhone. I’m hoping that Plaxo joins the iPhone bandwagon soon. Until then there are a few Google Calendar sync solutions for the iPhone that I need to look into like Spanning Sync or SyncJe which allows over the air (wireless) syncing of your iPhone contacts, calendar, and notes.

Well, it seems I’m also an iPhone fanboy. :)

    Did I even help?
